To help customers achieve the best paint application, it is useful to know the preferred application characteristics (see table below.)
| Minimum pigment settling/color float |
Minimum amount of mixing needed to obtain uniform color and consistency when paint can is opened. |
| Good brush or roller loading |
Effective consistency/minimum dripping
Oil-based paint still satisfactory: somewhat thin with some dripping
Latex expected to load heavily but easily on brush or roller with minimum dripping
|
| Minimum spatter |
Spatter resistance
Both latex and oil-based are formulated with spatter resistance
|
| Good film build |
Paint should deposit a film thick enough to provide good hiding and protection over a like color and flow uniformly onto the surface.
A quality brush and roller cover are also important.
|
| Good hiding |
Invisible overlap marks, flat latex paints have the best dry-hide (can't see overlap when dry) |
| Good flow |
Ease of painting |
| Leveling of brush marks |
Brush marks or roller stipple should flow out and not be noticeable, but the paint should not flow too well or it will sag or run.
A balance is sought between leveling and sag resistance.
